About SDGE

The Section on Developmental Genetic Epidemiology (SDGE) is part of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program (MAP) at the National Institute of Mental Health. MAP is the largest research program focused on mood and anxiety disorders, with laboratories specializing in depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Epidemiology is the field of science that investigates the causes and distribution of diseases. SDGE's focus is to apply the tools of epidemiology and genetics to identify factors that put people at higher risk for mood and anxiety disorders and to determine the associations between these disorders and other mental illnesses and medical conditions.
