Dr.
Jacobowitz is Chief of the Section
on Histopharmacology, Laboratory of Clinical Science,
at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda
Maryland. He received a Masters Degree in Anatomy, and
a Ph.D. in Pharmacology at Ohio State University School
of Medicine. He spent nine years on the staff of the Pharmacology
Department at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School
before joining the faculty of NIMH. He has recently produced
the state-of-the-art color atlas entitled, "Chemoarchitectonic
Atlas of the Developing Mouse Brain". |
| Research Interests |
| Dr. Jacobowitz's work has focused on brain neurochemicals and mapping of neural systems of the brain. As a major repository of information concerning sites of localization for potent brain neurochemicals, the lab has given birth to a field of neuroscience that Dr. Jacobowitz described as "brain cartography". His guiding principle is that knowledge of the building blocks, or "nuts and bolts," give us clues about how the nervous systems operate and how they might fail to disease and injury. Dr. Jacobowitz's laboratory is currently engaged in proteomics towards protein discovery in diseased human brains and those of mutant rodent models in addition to neuronal cells in culture. |
