Shui-Yu Lu, Ph.D.
Shui-Yu Lu Photo   Dr. Shui-Yu Lu is a Staff Scientist within the PET Radiopharmaceutical Sciences Section (Chief, Dr. Victor Pike), Molecular Imaging Branch, National Institute of Mental Health, NIH. He graduated from the Department of Chemistry, Nanjing University, China with a BSc degree in Organic Chemistry and obtained his PhD degree in Synthetic Polymer Chemistry at the University of Manchester, England. He carried out postdoctoral research at the Department of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh (Scotland) and was a Research Fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of Surrey (England) until May 2002. Dr. Lu joined NIMH in June 2002.
Research Interests:
The mission of the PET radiopharmaceutical Sciences Section is to develop novel radioactive probes (radiotracers) for the investigation of neuropsychiatric disorders with PET, which encompasses medicinal chemistry for probe discovery and radiochemistry for labeling candidate probes with a short–lived positron-emitter, such as cyclotron-produced carbon-11 (t1/2 = 20 min) or fluorine-18 (t1/2 = 110 min). As a key member of this section, Dr. Lu’s research is centered on the development of rapid, reliable and safe PET radiolabeling methodologies through the application of new reagents and innovative technologies. He is also engaged in targeted radioligand development. His current research interests include (1) the application of microfluidics technology to PET radiosynthesis; (2) development of electrophilic fluorination reagents, such as [18F]xenon difluoride; (3) radiolabeling with fluorine-18 under microwave conditions and (4) the synthesis and evaluation of radioligands for 5-HT1A receptor imaging.
