This Section investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying programmed cell death (also referred to as "apoptosis") of neurons and its implication for central nervous system (CNS) development, as well as the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. We also search for novel gene products involved in neuronal programmed cell death and effective agents that protect against this process. Particular emphasis is on the roles of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) on neuronal apoptosis and pathogenesis of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. In addition, we investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying neuroprotection mediated by psychotropic drugs, especially lithium.
