Kathleen R. Merikangas, Ph.D.

This program applies the tools of epidemiology and genetics to identify risk factors for mood and anxiety disorders, and their association with other psychiatric and medical disorders. Disciplinary representation within this section include: epidemiology, clinical psychology, developmental psychology, genetic epidemiology, psychiatry, and biostatistics. The major research goals are:

  • To apply the family study design to identify heritable components of psychiatric disorders and sources of comorbidity with other psychiatric and medical disorders
  • To study mechanisms for comorbidity between mood and anxiety disorders with other psychiatric disorders (ie., substance abuse) and medical disorders (ie.,  migraine)
  • To identify early manifestations of psychopathology by studying prospectively offspring of parents with psychiatric disorders using comprehensive domains of assessment with particular focus on the emergence of sex differences across the adolescent and early adult transitions
  • To conduct pilot studies of the components of prevention programs for mood and anxiety disorders in youth
  • To develop and apply study designs and statistical methods to identify gene – environment interaction using studies of half-siblings and step-siblings, offspring of twins and migrant studies

Samples for the programs in this Section include: Clinical samples of subjects with anxiety and affective disorders and their relatives and spouses; Population based samples of children and adolescents identified through local schools; Population based samples of adults.
