Susan E. Swedo, M.D., Branch Chief
The mission of the
Pediatrics & Developmental Neuropsychiatry Branch (PDN) is to identify factors which
influence the onset and expression of psychiatric symptomatology and to develop more
effective treatment and prevention strategies for pediatric psychopathology. The
Branch currently conducts clinical research on a variety of childhood psychiatric
disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, separation anxiety disorder
and Tourette’s syndrome. In response to public health concerns about childhood
bipolar disorder, and new research opportunities in affective neuroscience, PDN
is launching a major new initiative to investigate the phenomenology and treatment
of childhood bipolar disorder. These studies will not only provide valuable
information about the development of affective stability, but also complement
ongoing research of emotional dysregulation in children with PANDAS
(Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep
infections).
