The Biological Psychiatry Branch (BPB) conducts a broad program of research, training, and treatment of clinical psychiatric
problems including depressive, manic-depressive, and Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD)-related mood disorders.
The focus of the Branch is psychobiologic and brings together information from multiple disciplines, including psychiatry,
neuropsychology, neurology, neuroendocrinology, pharmacology, physiology, and biochemistry. Longitudinal evaluation of the
course of illness and response to treatment is an important clinical and research methodological approach. Specific research
interests include behavioral pharmacology and the biochemistry of neurotransmission in cocaine as well as in stress sensitization and
kindling. Research also focuses upon how these may relate to the evolution of psychopathological states. A general goal of
this Branch is to develop new understanding of and long-term effective treatments for mood and anxiety disorders.
