Thomas G. Schulze, M.D.
Dr. Thomas G. Schulze studied medicine (1990-1997) at the University of Erlangen–Nürnberg (Germany), the University of Barcelona (Catalonia/Spain), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C., and Wake Forest School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C. He then joined the University of Bonn (Germany) for a residency in adult psychiatry and a fellowship in psychiatric genetics. In 2000, he became a research associate with the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Chicago. In 2002, he joined the genetics unit of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program of the NIMH as a visiting fellow. From 2003 through 2007, Dr. Schulze was employed with the Department of Genetic Epidemiology in Psychiatry at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim (Germany), where he served as a group leader and Deputy Department Head. In 2008, he returned to the NIMH where he is now serving as the Assistant Director of Clinical Research within the Unit on the Genetic Basis of Mood and Anxiety Disorders.
In 2009, he was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD
Dr. Schulze’s research focuses on genotype–phenotype relationship in bipolar disorder and related psychiatric disorders. To study the genetic basis of response to lithium treatment in bipolar disorder, he and Dr. Francis J. McMahon have organized the international Consortium on Lithium Genetics (ConLiGen). Dr. Schulze is furthermore interested in the development of novel statistical tools to perform such studies in a systematic fashion.
Dr. Schulze has authored and co-authored more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals. His past and current awards include grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and NARSAD. He is the 2006 recipient of the Robins-Guze-Award of the American Psychopathological Association (APPA), the 2006 recipient of the Theodore-Reich-Award of the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics (ISPG), the 2007 recipient of the Future Award of the German Society of Bipolar Disorders (DGBS), and the 2009 recipient of the Hans-Jörg-Weitbrecht-Award for Clinical Neuroscience (Germany). . He is furthermore a member of the Junior Academy of Young Scholars and Scientists of the Academy of Sciences at the University of Heidelberg (Germany). He has been serving as a scientific advisor for the Heinz C. Prechter Fund for Manic Depression and several scientific journals and is a member of the Editorial Board of Psychiatric Genetics. In 2008, Dr. Schulze was elected to the Board of Directors of the ISPG. He is a member of several national and international research societies, such as the APPA, the International Group for the Study of Lithium Treated Patients (IGSLI), and the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP). Very recently, Dr. Schulze was admitted to the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) as an Associate Member. |
