MOOD AND ANXIETY DISORDERS PROGRAM

MAP INVESTIGATORS

Victor W. Pike, Ph.D.

Victor W. Pike, PhD is the Chief of the PET Radiopharmaceutical Sciences Section of the Molecular Imaging Branch, National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Pike received his BS (Chemistry) and PhD (organic chemistry) from the University of Birmingham (UK), where he also became a Research Fellow working on the synthesis of enzyme mimics. In 1978 he took an appointment in the MRC Cyclotron Unit (London) to pursue research on the development of imaging probes in support of new clinical research programs in positron emission tomography (PET). Dr. Pike became Head of the Chemistry and Engineering Group of the Cyclotron Unit in 1996, with responsibility for the direction of up to 50 scientific and technical staff engaged in cyclotron-related functions (cyclotron operation and maintenance, radionuclide production, research on radiotracer/radioligand development for PET, radiopharmaceutical production, quality assurance and quality control, radiometabolite analysis and the off-site sales of radiopharmaceuticals). This program generated a wide range of novel radiotracers and radioligands for a world-leading and intense program of investigations in neurology, psychiatry, cardiology, oncology and drug discovery with PET.

Dr. Pike's strongest personal research interests are in developing novel radiochemistry and radioligands for brain receptors. The Marie Curie Award and the Springer Prize are testaments to his important contributions. Dr. Pike was an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College School of Medicine. He delivered a course on the 'Chemistry of Medical Imaging' to the chemistry undergraduate school of the Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey (UK) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He played a major role in fostering pan-European cooperation in PET radiopharmaceutical science, including coordination of activities under European Concerted Actions. He advised bodies such as the IAEA and US Pharmacopoeia. Dr. Pike is currently an Editor of Applied Radiation and Isotopes and the Journal of Labeled Compounds and Radiopharmaceuticals and sits on the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
