Yashmin Jolanda G. Karten, Ph.D.
Dr. Karten, is a visiting fellow in the Mood and Anxiety
Disorders Research Program. She was awarded her Ph.D. in April, 2000 by the Biology Faculty of the University of
Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Before joining the NIMH in June 2002, she worked as a fellow of the Human Frontier
Sciences Program in the group of Drs. Bruce McNaughton and Carol Barnes, at the University of Arizona, USA.
There, she studied the replay of memory traces in the rat hippocampus during rest following a positive or
adverse experience (stress).
Currently, in the Unit on Neuroplasticity under the
mentorship of Dr. Heather Cameron, her research focuses on the continual addition of new granule cells to
the adult dentate gyrus. She is examining the electrophysiological functioning of these new neurons in order
to better understand their role in normal hippocampal function, such as learning and memory. |
