Richard Herrell, Ph.D.
Richard Herrell is a postdoctoral fellow in the Section on Developmental Genetic Epidemiology in
the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program at NIMH. He received his B.A. in political science from
Pomona College, M.A. in cultural anthropology from the University of Chicago, and Ph.D. in epidemiology
from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has conducted research on depression, suicide, and
substance abuse in twin samples and chronic fatigue and its comorbidity with psychiatric disorders in
probability samples of American Indians and Mexican-Americans. At present he is working on approaches
to psychiatric comorbidity in family and longitudinal samples to examine the specificity and stability
of disorders and on cross-cultural approaches to psychiatric predictors of HIV risk behaviors.
