Two Routes of Entry

Students can enter the program via the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the Karolinska Institutet (KI), although the NIH route is restricted to US citizens and permanent residents. Doctoral training should be completed in 4 to 5 years, and students variably distribute this time between the laboratories of their two mentors.

Students who enter via the KI route can do so only after two mentors (one from the NIH and one from the KI) have written a collaborative research proposal and been awarded a competitive research studentship. The next three awards will be announced in November 2012, with a subsequent group likely to be announced in late spring 2013. The two mentors then recruit a student to perform thesis research within the general scope of their collaborative research proposal. More detailed information can be found here.

Students who enter via the NIH route must complete an online application by 11:59 PM EST January 2, 2013. Promising applicants will be asked to visit the NIH for two days on February 18-20, 2013. All applicants via the NIH must be US citizens or permanent residents.
