How to Apply Students who benefit the most from this program tend to be academically advanced, independent, highly motivated, appreciate cultural diversity, and have developed (or at least developing) ideas of their educational goals and the research they wish to pursue. We want to select only those students who are likely to prosper and benefit from this unique opportunity. Thus, your application should address your attributes in these specific areas that make you likely to benefit from this program. Students who enter via the Karolinska Institutet (KI) route can do so only after two mentors (one from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and one from the KI) have written a collaborative research proposal and been awarded a competitive research studentship. The next three awards will be announced in November 2012, with a subsequent group likely to be announced in late spring 2013. The two mentors then recruit a student to perform thesis research within the general scope of their collaborative research proposal. Students who enter via the NIH route must complete an online application by 11:59 PM EST January 2, 2013. Promising applicants will be asked to visit NIH for two days on February 18-20, 2013. (dates yet to be determined). The subsequent instructions are only for those who wish to enter via the NIH route. All applicants via the NIH must be US citizens or permanent residents. The online application process is directed by the NIH’s Graduate Partnership Program (GPP) and is free of charge. Your personal statement should include but not necessarily be limited to the following components: 1) Research interests and career goals 2) Scientific research background (most important) and other relevant professional, educational, and volunteer experiences 3) Reasons for applying to the NIH / Karolinska Program In the "Additional Information" section, list at least three, but no more than six, tenured or tenure-track faculty members at NIH with whom you might like to work. List them in order of preference. You are not bound to select any of these investigators as your mentor. However, if asked to visit the NIH, you should interview with two to three of these potential mentors. You can consult the "List of Prior and Current NIH/KI mentors" here. QUESTIONS: Questions about technical issues related to the application process should be directed to Dr. Pat Wagner (wagnerpa@od.nih.gov). Questions related to the NIH / Karolinska Program can be sent to either of the two Co-Directors (robert.innis@nih.gov or victor.pike@nih.gov) or to the administrative staff at karolinska@mail.nih.gov.
